Start with a workflow. Then consider AI.
A useful AI pilot starts with an operating problem, not a software demonstration.
Choose a bounded task
Consider document classification, draft variance explanations or reconciliation support. Define the inputs, the expected output and how a human will decide whether the result is good enough.
Make the controls part of the design
Agree what data can be used, which users can access it and where exceptions go. Avoid uploading sensitive records to a tool before its security, contractual and data-handling arrangements have been reviewed.
Measure quality before claiming savings
Compare results with the existing process, including the effort needed for review and correction. Track error types, exceptions and the practical value to the team.
Keep judgement accountable
AI-generated work should support appropriately authorised people. Statutory filings, payments, approvals and professional advice need the relevant human review and responsibility.
